The Journey

Faculty, Students and Staff;

It is with a heartfelt tone that I write this note. The past 4 years of my experience at the Art Institute of Jacksonville has been a journey. I have spoken at each orientation and to so many of you personally over the past four years about the journey you are embarking on when you began your educational experience. At this time, I am reminded that I have traveled that journey with you. It brings a smile to my face. I am proud of what we have accomplished and what you will continue to achieve.

My memories are fond and extensive of the many milestones we have shared together. I personally feel that I have shared part of my soul with you, through the history, culture and science of food that we live here on campus and in our community through events. We have cooked together, talked together, ate together, met challenges together, and have always learned along the way. Our faculty are the best! I have been so very proud to serve them- and serve you!

Leadership is servitude.

My journey has come to an end at the Art Institute of Jacksonville. My last day as your academic director will be at the end of graduation on June 18th. It is your job to carry that dream you had when we meet and carry it into the into the future. I will miss you. Do not lose your passion for of your goals. It is a small world and our paths may cross again.

From the front burner,

Mark Mattern, MBA, CEC

The Demographics of Buying a Business   A white paper published by BizBuySell recently covered the demographics of those buying a business.  It was fascinating reading with some of their key findings (quoted directly from page 2 of the report below). Business ownership runs in families: 55 percent of sellers have a parent or grandparent that owned a small business. 49 percent of sellers plan to exit their small businesses in the next five years, but only 29 percent are currently prepared for the sale process. Younger buyers are more ethnically diverse than their elders: 49 percent of 18 to 29 year-old buyers identify as a minority, compared to 19 percent of buyers in their 50s or older. The number one motivation for purchasing a small business is the chance to be your own boss, cited by 63 percent of all buyers. 12 percent of sellers and almost 10 percent of buyers are veterans. These are just the key findings of this report but there are many more findings we will describe an...

The fall season

Fall is a great time of year. Poached pears are magic. The idea of spring sweetened by the spice of fall garnished with the chill of winter ice cream. Chef Mark Mattern
